Hansson Labisig is a professor of theology at University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. Hannson is the rare theologian, maybe the only Filipino theologian, that is interested in studying the intersection of sport and Christian faith. His Doctoral work focused on Hope as a Theological Virtue in the Athletic and Spiritual Lives of Filipino Student-Athletes.
Jake McDermott is head of health and physical education at Geneva Christian College in Tasmania and has a passion for sport and faith. An athlete himself, Jake has transitioned into teaching and research with a keen eye for how Christian faith is formed in in young people in and through sport. His research explores student identity, with a particular focus on understanding sport as a form of worship in Christian education.
Travis Vaughn is one of the key leaders behind the resurgence of Upward Sports, the largest youth recreation sports ministry in the United States. Each year, more than 225,000 young athletes participate in Upward programs run locally by churches across the country. Travis is also an accomplished runner. After earning a college scholarship in the sport, he stepped away from running for nearly ten years before returning with a goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. Seven years later, he achieved it. Today, he co-hosts the Kinda Fast Podcast, and helps lead Upward Running, where faith, fitness, and community come together.
Philip Leopold is a strategist, connector, and longtime advocate for the power of sport to serve humanity. Philip had a very successful career sports marketing – then was drawn in by the Vatican-inspired global movement Sport at the Service of Humanity, where he now serves in a leadership position.
John Ashley Null is a theologian and Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of North Africa. Ashley has also been longtime chaplain to elite athletes at the highest levels of sport. For over four decades—including six Olympic Games—he’s walked alongside world-class competitors, helping them navigate the pressures of performance and identity. As a theologian, Reverend Null is a leading scholar on Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformation.
Dr. Rob Ramseyer is an intentional leader of athletics. He’s the Vice President of Athletics and Strategic Expansion at Friends University in Witchita, Kansas. Alongside his athletic leadership work, Rob and Friends University golf coach Dustin Galyon recently co-founded the Impactful Coaching Project, which trains coaches to develop the whole person, and so much more. Symone Abbott first turned to Jesus hoping He would make her a better volleyball player—something she now describes as selfish. That initial request eventually blossomed into a humbling and joyful, life-changing faith. A multi-sport athlete growing up, Symone played at Northwestern University before building a professional career that has taken her to Italy, France, Puerto Rico, and the US. Josh Lindblom grew up in Indiana and found he could throw a baseball really hard. Josh eventually played college baseball at Tennessee and Purdue, then was drafted by the Dodgers in 2008, and made his Major league debut in 2011. Born with Spina Bifida, Casey Ratzlaff played many sports until he found tennis at the age of 12. Years later, Casey advanced to the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, and today he competes around the world as a professional in the sport of wheelchair tennis.

Bailey Moody played many sports as a kid, but at age 10 she was diagnosed with stage four osteosarcoma which required multiple treatments to save her life, including amputation of her right leg. Bailey drew on her faith and athletic drive to pursue wheelchair basketball. Since that time, Bailey has played for University of Alabama, earned a bronze medal in the Paralympics, and become a prominent player on the U.S. women’s wheelchair national team.

Wiebe Boer, the new President of Calvin University, tells his story of running among goats, growing up in Jos, setting a high school city record, rescuing his son, and falling in love with sport. Though he wanted to play football, he found success by running fast across the fields and on the track. Dr. Boer details how football, a sport brought by missionaries, was a unifying force in his home nation Nigeria, and how Christians can and should use the gift of sport to further benefit God’s kingdom.

Dontavious Hill tried the high jump in 9th grade, jumping just 4’8”. But just a few years later, while still in high school, Dontavious cleared the magical height of 7 feet, prompting a D1 college scholarship and a path toward elite international competition. Dontavious is a three-time All-American in the high jump at Auburn University and aspires to represent the US in the Olympics. The animating source within Dontavious is his faith in God, his inspiration on and off the track.
Brooke Ewart is a clinical counselor for athletes and founder of Rocky Mountain Sports Counseling Center. The center offers support for athletes as they work through a mental health crisis, injury, retirement, and other moments of stress and pain. Brooke and her team walk through the tough stuff with athletes, listing to the Holy Spirit, and help them get back into sport in a safe and healthy way.
There’s nothing more inspiring than a great story, and Wayman Britt has one. From tobacco road North Carolina to Flint Michigan, Wayman cultivated his basketball skills through hard work, the influence of wonderful mentors, and an unwavering trust in God. Wayman landed at the University of Michigan where he helped lead his team to the Big Ten Championship in 1974 and to the NCAA national championship game in 1976. Since then, Wayman has been a leader in business and government, and he’s ready to tell his story.
The book of Revelations depicts Jesus as a conquering lion, but far more often as a slaughtered lamb. Does this imagery cause us to think differently about what it means to conquer? New testament scholar Brian Gamel thinks so, and he shares how he believes the slaughtered lamb of Revelations changes the way we view and experience victory and loss in sport.
Keynote Speaker for the 3rd Global Congress on Sport and Christianity Elizabeth Bounds has pondered the question about sport and virtue her whole life. Elizabeth was a standout two sport athlete in soccer and basketball at Hope College, then got M.DIV degree from Truett Seminary, and is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Baylor University’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience studying virtues, character development, and spirituality in sport.

Rasheed Flowers play two sports at the NCAA Division I level, so it’s no surprise that he found his identity in sport and sport performance. But early on, due to his Christian faith and connection with sport ministry organizations like AIA and FCA, Rasheed knew identity in sport was a losing proposition. Now a doctoral student at the University of Kentucky, Rasheed is building on this experience in his research studying the effects of sports ministry involvement for African-American college football players at the highest level in the South Eastern Conference.
