Deadly Sins: Gluttony

Season 3 mini-series: Deadly Sins–Gluttony

A New Podcast Season: We’re starting Season 3 on the SPORT. FAITH. LIFE. podcast. And to kick off this season, we’re sprinkling in a mini-series on the Fruits of the Spirit and the Deadly Sins. We’ll continue featuring the work of others along the way.

The first deadly sin we’re discussing is gluttony. Think that’s a unique choice? We do, too.

What does gluttony have to do with sport? Listen to the podcast to find out.

Brian and Chad discuss:

  • Simple connections between gluttony and sport. In sport, athletes often take in far more calories than the ordinary person because of the excess of energy spent. An athlete must keep careful watch of calories in and calories out, and oftentimes these amounts are very high.
  • Sport as spectacle is often connected with feasts which are as much for show as they are for sustenance. How can we justify tailgating at a football game or gorging on concessions in the stadium?
  • The underlying concern of gluttony among athletes is that they must focus on themselves in order to achieve peak performance. They are constrained by their training habits. Even if those habits are good or virtuous in general, they require a narcissism that can lead to gluttony, among other things.
  • Gluttony is the only deadly sin that is simply an excess of doing something that we need to do in order to live. How does that change how we view this deadly sin?
