If you know anything about sport coming from the Vatican or Jesuit circles, you know of Dr. Patrick Kelly. A prolific author who has written for both scholarly and lay audiences, Pat has earned a reputation as a leading voice on sport and Christianity. He co-wrote the 2018 document “Giving the Best of Yourself,” the first book-length treatment of sports from the Catholic Church.

What you might not know is Pat’s academic lineage. Having studied under renowned scholar Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who first articulated the phenomenon known as the flow state, Pat is well versed in the fundamental experiences of sport–namely, play and related phenomena.
