More Than Just the Shot

Only two athletes have ever hit a game-winning shot for a national title in basketball for the University of North Carolina. One is Michael Jordan, who made a baseline jumper with 17 seconds left to beat Georgetown by 1 in 1982. The other is Charlotte Smith, who made a three pointer at the buzzer to beat Louisiana Tech by 1 in 1994.

Charlotte went on to a successful pro basketball career in Italy and then in the WNBA. She has followed that up with a coaching career, serving as the head coach at Elon since 2011. In only 13 seasons, she has already become the school’s winningest women’s basketball coach.

In this podcast episode, Charlotte discusses the impact of her “shot” on her life and offers some insight into leadership through her coaching–which includes handling losing seasons with a bigger goal in mind.
