The Fruits of the Spirit and the Deadly Sins in Sport 

The seventh and final deadly sin we’re discussing is pride. Pride is one of the deadly sins that isn’t problematic on its own. Instead, the sin creeps in through its excess. And sport is an enterprise that encourages us toward pride. How does it do this? Through competition, through achievement, through improvement, through excellence. And, indeed, athletes are taught how to be more confident in sport by focusing on their successes.

Pride is a complex characteristic. And in sport, there is good pride and bad pride. We can use pride to build us up, and we often use pride to show superiority in dwelling on our achievements. And that’s where we’re sensitivity to the age-old caution: pride comes before the fall.
